Initially, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) gathered several different standardization organizations in the telecom field to specify and define the global standard for 3G technology. After that, these institutions also became responsible for producing and maintaining specifications and technical reports related to 4G and 5G technologies, with the goal that mobile telecommunications take into account the recommendations and meet the requirements defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and that the networks and terminals are interoperable around the world.
The different 3GPP workgroups usually meet at the end of each quarter to plan and develop new specifications and discuss proposals for changes and additions to enhance previous versions and releases. This process occurs in parallel to the proposal, development, and freeze of other releases, ensuring they are compatible and that progress is continuous, stable, and meets the needs of companies and clients.
